'Aerotropolis' plan moves forward near Metro Airport; marketing to start in 2009 by Paula Gardner | Michigan Business Review

Marketing for the Detroit Region Aerotropolis should start in 2009 after stakeholders complete a four-step strategy to prepare the 60,000 acres near Metro Airport for development. The efforts will turn the corridor from Ann Arbor to Detroit into an economic engine for the state, generating 60,000 jobs, according a new study of the site.

The Grand Rapids-Wyoming area's per capita carbon footprint -- a measure of fossil fuel usage -- shrunk by 14 percent in the first half of this decade, creating a tie for the biggest decline among the nation's 100 largest metropolitan areas, according to a study released today.

For most folks, issues involving garbage seem exquisitely simple: Wheel a load of refuse to the curb once a week, then let a truck roll up and haul it away.

Just like that, it's gone. Poof. Out of sight and out of mind. Little thought is given to where all that garbage goes, what it costs to get rid of, what the health consequences of disposal might be, or how our lives might be improved if there were better ways to deal with a problem that doesn't really go away even though it's no longer sitting on the curb out front.

Call it the illusion of absence.
