Welcome to 'The Week' for October 6-12. This is where we will be posting comments such as news items, interesting blog posts, cool video and media, coming events, new web sites added to Absolute Michigan and other items of note.

Looking at our October Calendar we see that the Great Lakes Lighthouse Festival in Alpena runs from October 9-12. Now in it's 13th year, the four day event provides activities for the young and old including lighthouse tours (aerial, boat or personal vehicle), entertainment, and vendors. West Michigan’s premier wine tasting event, Food, Wine and All That Jazz, happens on October 10 at The Public Museum in Grand Rapids. Take a trip down memory lane in an old-fashioned covered wagon or glide down the scenic Grand River on a riverboat during on October 10 & 11 during the Color Cruise & Island Festival in Grand Ledge. Head to Charlevoix for Applefest Days at Friske's Farm Market. Enjoy wagon rides, U-pick apples, our own Miss Apple everything apples. Harvest Days in Harbor Country is celebrated October 10-13. Step back in time to a turn-of-the-20th century Hallowe’en at Green Field Village in Dearborn. October 11 - 12 is CRANE FEST XIV at the Baker Sanctuary. Anywhere between 2,000 - 6,000 Sandhill cranes congregate at the Michigan Audubon Baker Sanctuary along with thousands of birders! This event is the largest wildlife congregation in Michigan that attracts as many as 10,000 folks over the weekend.

    Mich. colleges beef up training for 'green' jobs

    Brandon Knight entered the alternative energy engineering program at Lansing Community College in 2006 with an eye toward owning a business dedicated to developing solar panels, wind turbines and perhaps even other energy sources that people haven't heard of yet.

    He believes alternative energy holds the future for him and the state.

    "It is quite clear to our generation how things are moving in the world. Alternative energy really provides benefits," Knight said. "The big draw to me is the balance between the environment and the economy, and this improves both."

    Knight, 25, is among a number of students toward whom the state's educational institutions are tailoring programs in alternative energy. With demand spiking worldwide for more eco-friendly options, and the days of guaranteed jobs in the auto industry becoming a thing of the past, some educators agree overall interest in the alternative energy field is increasing.

    New Ford feature allows parents to set speed limits on teens cars

    So you think junior is a little too lead-footed when he drives the family car? Starting next year, Ford Motor Co. will give you the power to do something about it.

    The company will roll out a new feature on many 2010 models that can limit teen drivers to 80 mph, using a computer chip in the key.

    Parents also have the option of programming the teen's key to limit the audio system's volume, and to sound continuous alerts if the driver doesn't wear a seat belt.

    Former Republican Senator Lincoln Chafee (RI) will be in Birmingham, MI tonight. Chafee, now an Independent, will be speaking to a crowd of republicans, independents, and small business owners in the Oakland County area. Please join us at 1025 E. Maple Rd at 7:30p tonight (10/9).

    Event is free and open to the public.
