I enjoyed your story about the Edmund Fitzgerald. Were you aware that there is going to be a 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Launching of the "Fitz" on Saturday, June 7th, 2008 at the Lake Erie Metropark? THis celebration has been put together to honor all of those who worked on the Designing, Building, and Construction of the Edmund Fitzgerald as well as former crews and family members. I am a Northern Michigan Artist that will be unveiling two 3 Demensional Carvings (Museum Quality) for this event. The first of the two is entitled "Fare Thee Well" which dipicts the "Fitz" in 1958 as it is passing the Great Lake Engineering Works, where it was built. The second carving is entitled "Farewell" and dipicts the "Fitz" on the final voyage on Novemnber 10th, 1975.
THis even will alos play host to many orther artists, authors, ship model builders, movie makers, shipwreck divers etc. All who are donating their time to honor those who were involved with this ship. You may contact me at revpdog@hotmail.com for mor information or go to the official website ssedmunfitzgerald.com for extensive coverage.

My grandfather was a steward on the Lakes. I was in the 8th grade when the Fitz went down. We didn't know if gramps ship was in port or out on the lake, and we waited up til he called. I can well imagine what it must have been like for those who had family on the Fitz. Your video is a well done tribute not only to the Fitz and her crew, but to all who have been lost in "The Gales of November"

"Celebrating the launch of the S. S. Edmund Fitzgerald"

It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon on June 7th, 1958, as more than 10,000 people lined the banks of the Detroit River. They had come to witness the launching of Hull 301 at the Great Lakes Engineering Works of River Rouge, Michigan.
Mrs. Edmund Fitzgerald, wife of the president of the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company for which the ship was named, christened the brand new ship and at 12:34 p.m. the 729 ft. "Edmund Fitzgerald" slid gracefully into the basin amid cheers, salutes, and well wishers.
For many of those in attendance, it was a spectacle that they would never forget.
The shipyard workers who constructed "Big Fitz" felt a deep sense of satisfaction as they anxiously watched the launch of this marvelous vessel. Being a prideful lot, they often endured long hours and harsh conditions. This was their "crowning achievement" and the beauty of their craftsmanship was truly evident to all those present.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of that memorable event. It is an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate a joyous time in our lives. It is also a chance to recall the great pride and cherished memories experienced by the ship workers, the community, and all who had the opportunity to witness the launching of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
On this historic occasion, let us joyously share our personal stories, renew old friendships, and fondly remember the day when the "Queen Of The Lakes" was born.

June 7, 2008 - 50th
Special event plan in Detroit this year

The planners of the 2008 event welcome other community inputs since Detroit has significantly contributed to making America an industrial giant from the early days of Michigan's history.

Tasha, check out the Detroit News articles linked above! They have some interesting stuff about the sinking. As a person who wrote a fair number of reports, let me suggest that taking an interesting angle (like: What was the storm like for those NOT on the Fitz) might give you a more interesting report.
