The Freep reports that the voters have chosen in yesterday's primary and Virg Bernero and Rick Snyder will fight to be Michigan's next governor. With about 2/3 of precincts reporting, Snyder had 37% to U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra's 27% and Attorney General Mike Cox's 23% while Bernaro cruised past House Speaker Andy Dillon 59%-41%.
Snyder overcame the GOP's business and anti-abortion rights establishment, which largely had backed Attorney General Mike Cox.
"Tonight, we've taken a giant step forward in creating a positive future for Michigan," Snyder told celebrating supporters.
Bernero's landslide showed the muscle of organized labor, which backed him with an estimated $2 million for a TV campaign.
Bernero cranked up his populist "Wall Street vs. Main Street" message and came from behind after trailing the better-known Dillon in polls for most of the campaign.
Both candidates have a strong message of discontent with the current state of affairs. Peter Luke's looks at what's next for Rick Snyder, Virg Bernero and the Michigan's gubernatorial campaign:
Bernero, who defeated Dillon 59-41 percent said "voters heard our message loud and clear: Working people count. Manufacturing and small business matter. The American dream is worth fighting for and the Michigan we grew up in, the Michigan that was at the top, is the Michigan we're ready to fight for today."
...While the other candidates stressed themes like illegal immigration, gun rights and abortion, Snyder was talking about environmental protection, the importance of education and rebuilding Michigan's cities. The last ad of his campaign featured a diverse group of voters saying Snyder's candidacy represented Michigan's "one chance" for systemic economic and political change.
