The Detroit Free Press reports that yesterday the University of Michigan, Michigan State University and Wayne State University announced an agreement to share research and researchers between the three schools.

In the last five years, the state's three research universities have averaged a patent a day and led to 500 new agreements to license patents or other research for other entities - largely private companies - to use. By sharing research and talent, the universities say they are likely to develop even more marketable technologies, and help Michigan compete when it comes to attracting business and industry.

"We have an absolute responsibility to the state to help transform an economy that is flagging," U-M President Mary Sue Coleman said in a press release. "Together we have achieved much. But we must set our sights higher and do even more to turn ideas into action."
