The Game: Michigan Wolverines vs. Ohio State Buckeyes

Scoreboard by mollyali

Well, here we are in 2007, with a lot less hype headed into the annual matchup between the University of Michigan Wolverines and the Ohio State Buckeyes after Wisconsin beat Michigan and Illinois stunned OSU:

The defeat not only crippled Ohio State's dreams of a national championship, it knocked the Buckeyes into a tie for the top spot in the Big Ten because of Michigan's earlier loss to Wisconsin.

Not since Nov. 14, 1959, had Michigan and Ohio State both lost the week before their annual year-end grudge match, which once again will decide the Big Ten.

The Game starts at noon on Saturday on ABC, and while doesn't have quite as much on the line, but it's still a big one. Read on for the our massive post from November 2006 on history of this rivalry with tons of links to historical and present-day info.

According to ESPN, UM vs Ohio State is the #1 rivalry in sports. As even today a picture of Woody Hayes is enough to send me into the berserkergang, I'm not going to argue.

Both Michigan and OSU cruised to victories yesterday, setting up a November 18, 2006 showdown of #1 vs. #2 teams and causing ABC television execs to do the ad dollar dance. We are gathering links, stories, video and more.

from the Art of Football
Bentley Historical Library

ESPN says that when Ohio Stadium opened in 1922, Michigan christened it with a 22-0 thumping of the Buckeyes. Wikipedia chronicles this historic rivalry (and what does it say that the rivalry merits a page?), saying that many refer to it as simply "The Game". Since 1935, it's been the final regular season game on both schools' schedules. This year, as is often the case, both schools are at the top of college football's rankings, adding fuel to the fire. The best site on the UM vs. OSU Rivalry from the UM Bentley Library and the OSU Library.

The two modern symbols of the rivalry were OSU coach Wayne Woodrow Hayes and UM coach Bo Schembechler. Bucknuts, an OSU fan site, says Woody Hayes was a "hot-tempered, difficult, and aggressive man". I think they also described the surface of the sun as "a bit warm". Hayes was the perfect arch-enemy: he hated Michigan (check the Bucknuts link or scroll to the comments for a great story illustrating this) and Michigan hated him back. What many may not know is that Schembechler was an assistant to Hayes at OSU from 1959-1963. There really isn't a great site about Bo, but Wikipedia's entry on Bo Schembechler probably has the best info including great trivia like the two teams have evenly split the last fifty seven meetings (from 1949 to 2005), with 27 wins apiece and three ties. Tiebreaker!
Winged Helmets There's a whole lot of multimedia out there. The best video we found is at the bottom of the article. On the photo front, you can click the photo to the left for a great shot from Andrew Morrell. There's a great set of photos from Michigan vs. Ohio State 2003. and (just added) photos from the 1927 UM vs. OSU game opening Michigan Stadium on Michigan in Pictures. You can hear "The Voice of Michigan Football" Bob Ufer recite Burying Woody Hayes and other classic calls.

On Google video, there's a great 3 minute intro to an hour-long special from TFN on the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry. From YouTube, you can see the 1968 thrashing at the hands of OSU and Desmond Howard running back a 91 yard punt return in his Heisman season. On the musical front, you can learn about the history of the Hail to the Victors song and see it sung from the top of Ohio Stadium. There's also a photo montage to The Victors. On the slightly strange side, how about Jean Luc Picard's orders regarding the Buckeyes? (Check out this photo of Patrick Stewart at the game!)

When you put together "musical" and "strange" and add a triple the recommended dose of "Ohio State", you get something that we have to give an "R" rating but also have to admit is pretty darn funny. Via Deadspin (language, crude humor) was a link to Schembechler in good spirits, back cheering for Wolverines in an Ohio newspaper. In the article, Bo reacts to a band called The Dead Schembechlers (language, crude humor x2). All we can say is that if it turns into a battle of the bands, Michigan could be in trouble.

The game will be shown on ABC at 3:30 PM on Saturday, Nov. 18. For radio stations, check out Michiguide.com's University of Michigan Sports Radio list.

In Let the Hype Begin Michigan TB Mike Hart says: "It feels great. It's going to be probably the biggest game in everyone's lives on our team. It's a huge game. We're undefeated, they're undefeated. We're playing for a Big Ten championship and a national championship. I don't think there's a bigger game out there."

The Freep's sports blog has History Lessons by Bill McGraw that talks about the history of the rivalry and adds that ESPN Classic will show seven of the best recent games starting this morning at 10 a.m. (1974) and 2 p.m. (1995), but they won't be airing one of the best in memory - 1969, when the 12th-ranked Wolverines upset the top-ranked Buckeyes, 24-12.

    From that Buckeyes page:

Woody was famous for his hatred for Michigan and anything that had to do with the state (he referred to it, of course, as "that state up north" or "that team up north") . One night on a recruiting trip in the state of Michigan, an assistant noticed that the car he was driving was going to run out of gas. He let Woody, who was dozing in the passenger seat, that he had to pull over for gas. Woody refused, and the assistant drove on. The assistant, who saw the weather was starting to get bad, began to become worried about getting stuck in the middle of nowhere, and once again stressed his desire to pull over and get gas. Woody erupted: "No, goddammit! We do NOT pull in and fill up. And I'll tell you exactly why we don't. It's because I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan! We'll coast and PUSH this goddam car to the Ohio line before I give this state a nickel of my money!" The assistant knew he wasn't kidding, and they barely made it across the border and sputtered into the first gas station they found in Ohio.

Woody Hayes. There will never be another one. Thank goodness.

This game could possibly be the best NCAA football match-up this season. Think of it this way; WR- Minningham(M) vs. Ginn (OSU), the nations most dangerous players when it comes to catching a football. Then you got Troy Smith and Chad Henne. Mike Hart will have a say somewhere, sometime. For the Wolverines this game means everything, and if your Ohio State this game means everything when trying to preserve the National Title.

Beautiful Michigan essay. It brings up the gore. The one picture I missed was a shot of Al Ludwig, a tackle in the 1955 game hitting "Hop along" Cassidy" at the goal line in a game that went the wrong way. I was there in the end zone swearing that Cassady didn't get over the line.

Errr ... here's a rather crazed interview with Bo Biafra of the Dead Schembechlers (the band that headlines the annual "Hate Michigan" rally).

I'm a pretty big sports fan, but it seems to me that the folks in Columbus take their sports a bit more seriously. Anybody have insight into this?

Just Like To Post A Poem For Gameday

    driving in vans
    the buckeye fans
    will fill the horse shoe
    a rowdy pack
    will try to attack
    the incoming maize and blue
    the team from the south
    will scream from their mouth
    and yell their buckeye cheers
but when the clock runs out
    and the people shout
hail to the victors is all you will hear
when all is said and done
    the real number one
will go to the team with more talent
    and leaving their stamps
    as the national champs
    will be the victors valient
    for now number one
    should be fun
and theirs no reason to doubt it
but say goodbye to that ranking
    because after this spanking
ohio state will be leaving without it
yes the game will be tough
    and will be close enough
if michigan cant use super mario
    but we are number one
    at stopping the run
and will win even with that scenario
    they got gonzales and pittman
    though not the real hitmen
they also have smith and ginn
    but with our Hart spilling
    and while LaMarr comes killing
    Michigan will get the win
    while just rushing four
    will open the door
you may see us rush a fifth
    and an avalanche
    of Alan Branch
will be coming down on Troy Smith
on the field we will drop them
    if running is their option
the pass will be tried all day
    but dont throw the ball
    against Leon Hall
or he will have it going the other way
    with our line Branch-ing out
    our defense is stout
    our offense will not yeild
    with time of possession
    at our discretion
their offense wont hit the field
    with weapons a plenty
    for use by Chad Henne
the ball will be spread out even
    Mario's deep threat is there
    and so is Adrian Air.
and the oh so dangerous Steven
    on any one touch
    noone can do as much
as the kid they call Breaston
    and he will make plays
    in all sorts of ways
if their defense tries to test him
    no defensive prong
    will be getting past Long
with Hart carrying loads on his own
and to keep the D honest
the player Henne has grown fondest
will be leaving the corners blown
    the buckeye pride
    has had their ride
and tressel has had his too
but when the scarlet and gray
    are layed away
riding on are the maize and blue

    Thanks For Reading

-Better luck next year Blue, at least Troy can't beat you 4 times in a row!

  23. Jim
    Posted November 19, 2006 at 10:49 pm | Permalink

If Michigan fans really want to have another game with OSU this season, I say let them have it. OSU has beaten them 3 times in a row -- all with Henne and Hart and more or less the same crew. This will give Troy Smith the chance to be the only OSU quarterback to win 4 against Michigan. Also, it could put Tressel up 6-1 against Michigan. And it could put Lloyd Carr back in a little bit of hot water.

But! Wolverines, think before you wish... your team only led the game in the first few minutes yesterday, then had to play catch up for the rest. And they fell short. For every statement they made, OSU responded. If it weren't for 3 OSU turnovers, and 10 points off of them, it wouldn't have been close. And 2 of those turnovers were because of bad snaps from an injured OSU center... unforced. And in January, he’ll be healed.

Remember, OSU has played your offense now 3 times and won 3 times. They have figured you out. You, however, have met Troy Smith 3 times and still can’t find a way to stop him. What makes you think this will be different?

Think before you wish… chances are you will be very embarrassed in Arizona.

  24. Michigan
    Posted November 20, 2006 at 4:16 am | Permalink

Yes, we still want that game. Turnovers are a part of a football game. So are injuries. Don't try to take away our good play by blaming it on an injured center and turnovers. I'm still not convinced that OSU is that much better than us. Beat us good in that national championship game, then I'll believe it. GO BLUE!

As a Michigan fan normally I would regretfully concede that the best team won. There is just one problem however, this has not yet been proven. The final results could have been quite different as a result of one bad call, the helmet to helmet hit by Shawn Crable.Looking at the replay, with an open mind, was that hit intentional and avoidable. To both these questions one would have to say a resonding NO.To say otherwise would be the same as telling someone falling from a considerable height to stop before hitting the ground. That call was such a blantent error of judgement and could have been the real turning point of the game. With so much great talent on the field that day it just seems a shame that the final results of the game possibably came down to a error, not by one of the many talented players but a bad call by the ump. If were going to get into bad calls, how about that roughing the center call. Maybe he should have kept his head down all game long and nobody could have touched him. Basically, suck on it. You lost and it should have been much worse had it not been for unforced fumbles.

The first is The Big Game Blog from the Ann Arbor News that has all kinds of features including the commemorative video above.

Riveting rivalry: TV documentary about Michigan, Ohio St. from the LSJ has some great stuff on the HBO ducumentary "The Rivalry,":

To the outside world, the University of Michigan and Ohio State University seem kind of the same.

Just 200 miles apart, they are filled with strong, sturdy Midwesterners. And once each November, the sturdiest of them collide on a football field.

That's a day of venom and vengeance. Already ahead by 36 points, Ohio State coach Woody Hayes once tried to rub it in with a two-point conversion. Asked why, he reportedly said, "because they wouldn't let me go for three."
