Detroit Most Impoverished City, Michigan Salaries Fall The Free Press reports that according to the Census Bureau's American Community Survey, Detroit tops the list of the country's most impoverished cities. The survey found that 33.6% of residents live in poverty and that Detroit is the country's 11th largest city (pop. just over 900,000). The News adds that Michigan is one of 8 states where salaries fell in 2004 - 3% to an average of $44,300.

Hendrix Files for Recount, Could Cost Detroit $500,000 The Detroit News reports that mayoral challenger Freman Hendrix (who trailed by 14,540 votes after results were certified Tuesday) filed for a recount in all 720 Detroit precincts, saying a review is needed to bring the city together again. The hand-counting process could take a month and cost city taxpayers more than $500,000.

Annual Detroit Winter Blast The Motown Winter Blast will return February 9-11, 2007 for the third year with a new name: Detroit's Winter Blast. The Blast was launched in 2005 as a build-up to Super Bowl XL and is expected to attract about 400,000 people to 11 downtown city blocks.

Digging out Detroit Michigan Radio's Jack Lessenberry interviews University of Pennsylvania professor Tom Sugrue about Detroits troubles. Sugrue wrote a study of the city 10 years ago called "The Origins of the Urban Crisis: Race and Inequality in Postwar Detroit." Highly recommended.

Detroit Auto Show: Chevy Volt an early darling AutoBlogGreen has an extensive article about the first vehicle in GM's new E-Flex platform, the Chevy Volt. The Volt (as yet a prototype) can run on electricity, gasoline, E85 or biodiesel. The electric battery allows a range of 40 miles on a 6 hour charge from a standard 110 V outlet. When the 12 gallon tank is filled, the range is 640 miles!

Detroit Auto Show: The Big Three's green machines A reader comment prompted us to search for how the GM proposes to recycle the batteries from the Volt and other E-Flex vehicles. We never really found the answer but what we did find was pretty cool. Includes articles about the Chevy Volt and the Ford Airstream concept.

TV News to focus on Detroit Auto Industry The Detroit Free Press reports that Charles Gibson of ABC's World News will broadcast live from metro Detroit tonight and Tuesday. Tonight's broadcast will be live from Ford's historic Rouge plant and include a visit to GM's design center and interviews with Ford's Alan Mulally and General Motors' Rick Wagoner. Tuesday will look at life after taking a buyout.

Detroit Lion tight end Charlie Sanders named to Football Hall of Fame A visit to FireMillen.com "just to check" didn't produce a new Lions coach, but it did produce a link to news that Detroit Lions tight end Charlie Sanders (#88) will be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Sanders caught 336 passes for 4,817 yards and 31 TDs in 10 seasons with the Detroit Lions. He was voted to seven Pro Bowls and named to the NFL's All-Decade Team of the 1970s.

Detroit Heritage River Water Trail Metromode had a nice article on the Detroit Heritage River Water Trail, envisioned to be a 120 mile blue belt composed of the 32 mile stretch of the Detroit River (from Lake St. Clair to Lake Erie) plus its three major tributaries - the Huron, Rouge, and Raisin rivers. Hip Hop Icons featured in Detroit exhibit The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD) will host an exhibition of portraits of hip-hop icons Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, Common, Kanye West, Reverend Run, Duke, Lil Jon, Don "Magic" Juan, Whoo Kid, Marc Ecko and Russell Simmons by Russian-born American painter Alexander Melamid.
