Detroit to Close 34 Schools The Detroit News reports that 10,600 students will be bound for different buildings this fall as the Detroit Public Schools on Thursday announced it would close 34 schools to cut costs and get the district in sync with its dwindling population. Metro Detroit Job Sprawl Among Worst in Nation The Detroit News reports that a study by the Brookings Institution has found that jobs in Metro Detroit sprawl across the suburbs more than almost anywhere else in the US, isolating many African-Americans from potential employers. Detroit Techno Fest Gets Agreement The Detroit Free Press reports that Detroit artist Kevin Saunderson has signed a deal with the City of Detroit to produce Hart Plaza's annual techno party. The new contract, a two-year deal with an extension option, will also bring a new name to the Memorial Day weekend marquee: "Fuse-In Detroit: Electronic Movement." It may also bring an admission charge to fans of the traditionally free fest. Virtual Detroit The Detroit Free Press reports on a new, interactive Web site that lets users tour a virtual downtown launched by Technology Productions Inc. NFL to Plant Trees in Detroit The Great Lakes Radio Consortium has a feature detailing the plans of National Football League officials to plant acres of trees in Detroit. They're hoping to offset extra greenhouse gases that will be emitted during next year's Super Bowl. 2005 Detroit Area Golf Guide The Detroit Free Press has published its annual guide to the top 10 public courses in the Detroit Area. Detroit Historical Museum Adopt-a-Class Program The Detroit Free Press reports that in an effort to help cash-strapped schools, the Detroit Historical Museums & Society is offering a program for Detroit Public Schools (and other districts) that will reduce the cost of a visit for students and districts that qualify. Mr. Gates Goes to Detroit Detroit Free Press technology writer Mike Wendland has a feature on the visit of Bill Gates to the Motor City and Detroit's auto industry. Gates spoke to over 400 auto industry executives about how Microsoft software could make cars more convenient, safer, easier to maintain and fun to drive. Gates also gave a million dollars to the Henry Ford for a new exhibit on the evolution of technology. Engler, Detroit Politicians Exchange Attacks The Detroit Free Press reports that in a talk before the Detroit Economic Club, former Michigan Governor John Engler attacked Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, the Detroit City Council and Detroit schools on Monday, saying they are dragging the city down economically. Detroit reps fired back that the Engler administration used all the state reserves and didn't leave anything for the new governor. Detroit Home Prices Among Worst in Nation The Detroit News reports that although home prices are skyrocketing around the nation, Detroit home prices (and prices in Michigan as a whole) are about $16,000 below average. Median home prices in Metro Detroit increased just 1/2% to $151,000 from the first quarter of 2004 to the first quarter of 2005 while national prices jumped 9.7%. The Comerica TasteFest - Detroit, June 30th - July 4th Detroit Slides to 11th Largest US City The Detroit Free Press reports that Detroit is now the nation's 11th-largest city with a population of 900,198 (down 12,274 in the year that ended July 1, 2004). The city lost more people in those 12 months than any other U.S. city, according to Census Bureau figures. San Jose, California took Detroit's 10th position. Feds Take Over Detroit Housing Agency The Detroit News reports that the federal government took control of Detroit's Housing Commission on yesterday, citing decades of neglect and mismanagement in a program designed to help some of the poorest people in the city. U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development official Lindsey Reames of Grand Rapids will manage the agency. Detroit Area Energy Efforts The Detroit News has a feature on measures Metro Detroit communities and schools are taking to battle rising energy costs including dialing down the thermostat and experimenting with fuels made from animal fats. African American Art from the Walter O. Evans Collection; Detroit The African American art collection of Dr. Walter O. Evans is regarded as one of the important historical collections of art created by American artists of African descent. African American Art from the Walter O. Evans Collection features selected works in various media from Evans' private collection of over 500 objects. Broad in scope, the exhibit's more than 80 paintings, sculptures and works on Deserting Detroit? Jack Lessenberry had a series of pieces looking at Harvard economist Edward Glaeser's recent comments in the New York Times Magazine, saying of Detroit that "There is no reason why it can't, and shouldn't, decline. Places decline and places grow. We shouldn't stand in the way of that." In the interview, Glaeser suggests that politicians should accept the reality that Detroit will shrink... Detroit Electronic Music Festival: Memorial Day Weekend Sasha at Detroit Wonk takes a look at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival (DEMF), scheduled for Memorial Day Weekend (May 27-29, 2006). The event will be held at Hart Plaza and features a ton of the top acts worldwide, including many Detroit artists. Granholm, DeVos to Appear at Detroit Town Hall Meeting The Freep reports that Gov. Detroit About to Get a Media Behemoth Beginning May 5, the Detroit Free Press and WDIV-TV (Local 4, Michigan's first TV station) will begin sharing reporting resources in print, on television and on the internet. The new "convergence editor" will be Mike Wendland who spent 18 years at WDIV-TV before joining the Free Press as technology columnist in 2000. Jennifer Granholm and Republican challenger Dick DeVos face-to-face for the first time Friday in a debate at Cobo Center. While most of their talk appeared inconsequential (state IDs, auto insurance, gas tax) there was apparently some discussion of econmic platforms. Granholm touted the "most complete and detailed economic plan of any state in the country... Timeline of Detroit and the Detroit Free Press In celebration of its 175th Anniversary, the Detroit Free Press has a great timeline from 1831 to the present that charts the growth of Detroit and the newspaper. In 1831, Detroit had a population of 2,300 (35th in the nation). The mayor was Marshall Chapin and Lewis Cass, John R. Williams and Joseph Campau were the power brokers. Whitefish Return to Detroit River Fisheries scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service last fall verified the presence of both spawning lake whitefish and fertilized whitefish eggs, the agencies announced Friday. The initiative would install wind turbines on contaminated property along the Detroit River. If windmills are placed along the Detroit River, it would be the first project of its type to take place on contaminated land in an urban area in the United States. Detroit Schools Rank Last, Officials Question Data The Detroit Free Press reports that a report comparing the 50 largest school districts in the US ranks the Detroit's public schools last in the nation and finds that just 21.7% of the city's students graduate in four years. The Detroit News, however, carries a report in which DPS officials dispute the figure, saying the district actually graduated 44.5% in the year in question... UPS & EPA Testing Green Hybrid Truck in Detroit MSNBC reports that delivery giant UPS and the Environmental Protection Agency have teamed up to build what they call "the world's most fuel-efficient and cost-effective delivery vehicle." The Volt (as yet a prototype) can run on electricity, gasoline, E85 or biodiesel. The electric battery allows a range of 40 miles on a 6 hour charge from a standard 110 V outlet.
