2005 Tourism Roundup The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports that 2005 was a poor year for tourism with room occupancy rates below 50% (characterized as "pathetic"). The state estimates tourism is a $16 billion a year industry in Michigan and generates more than 180,000 jobs. Michigan's top 5 desinations were Traverse City, Frankenmuth, Detroit, Grand Rapids and Mackinaw City.
