Michigan Mastodon

Mastodon Bones by kafka4prez

The Detroit Free Press has great coverage on the excavation of 10,000+ year old mastodon bones discovered by road construction workers in Rochester Hills. Mastodons were fairly common in Michigan in their day, inhabiting the spruce forests that covered the northern parts of the Lower Peninsula. Michael Stafford, director of the Cranbrook Institute of Science, called the discovery a really big deal and said "We had a wonderful morning. We recovered ribs, scapulas, feet and anklebones and a tibia."

The story also includes a great photo gallery (as in: you gotta see this!) and you can click the photo to the right for many more photos of mastodon bones at UM.
