The Grand Rapids native and longtime senator from Michigan was a key player in forming the United Nations, forged support for the Truman Doctrine and NATO and is something of a legend among students of American foreign policy. To Defend Michigan's Honor Americans celebrate the first Monday of September as Labor Day (declared a national holiday by President Grover Cleveland in 1894). But years earlier, the first Monday in September was a day of tense expectancy as Michigan militia, led by our "boy governor," prepared to defend Michigan's honor in the streets of a settlement called Toledo. The fight for a town that Mic Ann Arbor Group Honors Michigan Women in Computing The Great Lakes IT Report tipped us off to the announcement from Ann Arbor Association for Women in Computing of the winners of their third annual "Top Michigan Women in Computing" Awards. They will present the awards at a gala in November with proceeds from the event helping to fund scholarships for women studying information technology. Benefit to Honor Great Lakes Mariners, Nov 11th; Brimley Cyrus McCormick to be Honored Cyrus Rice McCormick, 1849-1936, son of Cyrus Hall McCormick who invented the mechanical grain reaper, enjoyed hiking and camping in the area near Michigamme that is now the McCormick Tract Wilderness Area. Along with his attorney Cyrus Bentley, he decided to build a trail from Fortress Lake — later renamed White Deer Lake — to the Huron Mountain Club near Big Bay... Effort Started to Honor Architect of Michigan's Capitol Although Elijah Myers designed the state capitol buildings of Texas, Colorado and Michigan, his Detroit grave is marked only by a simple stone, with no indication that one of the more influential architects of the late 1800s is buried there. Myers' works include hospitals, high schools and town halls - at least one building in every state that was in the Union during his lifetime... Honoring Selfridge's Tuskegee Airmen The Detroit News reports on a ceremony held at Selfridge Air Base to honor "Tuskegee Airmen" who trained at Selfridge. From 1942 to 1944, an estimated 330 African-American pilots received advanced gunnery training at Selfridge after receiving their wings at Tuskegee Army Airfield. U of M Football Honored on Wheaties Box Wheaties unveiled a special-edition package honoring the University of Michigan Football Program. The box featuring the Michigan Wolverines was one of three special-edition packages announced this week. Wheaties also honored the University of Notre Dame and the University of Georgia for their elite college football programs.
