Can we save our schools in Michigan? Michigan public schools will lay off thousands of employees and more than 100 districts could be insolvent if the state doesn’t find a way to plug a $400-per-pupil funding shortfall in funding next year.
Debating Demolition & Downsizing in Detroit The NY Times took a look at new efforts to save Michigan Central Station and NPR reports that with a quarter of Detroit's 350,000 buildings vacant or in shambles, Mayor Dave Bing wants to reshape the city by getting rid of them and relocating residents who live in desolate neighborhoods, saying it's too expensive to provide city services in areas that are like urban deserts.

Women's History Month: Sarah Emma Edmonds Seelye Sarah Emma Edmonds Seelye, born in 1841, ran away from home at age 15 to escape her tyrannical father and an arranged marriage. She was living in Flint at the start of the Civil War in 1861. After the fall of Fort Sumter, she volunteered for the Union army as Franklin (Frank) Thompson and was assigned to Flint's Union Greys, a militia unit.

Michigan Says YES to Sulfide Mining Michigan regulators gave final approval Thursday to a nickel and copper mine for the Upper Peninsula, despite opponents' fears it would pollute streams that feed Lake Superior and provide habitat for a rare type of trout. The mine is a sulfide mine or acid mine and this will likely be the first of many in the Upper Peninsula.
