Marquette, Michigan Search ResultsPages & ArticlesMarquette Study Finds Housing Prices Jumping The Mining Journal reports that a study has found that the median price of homes in the Multiple Listing Service for the Marquette area jumped 14.8 percent, rising from $113,250 in 2003 to $130,000 in 2004. The average sale price (which saavy buyers know is not the same as the asking price) rose even more, to 16.4%.Marquette Mountain Seeks Four-Season Business The UP Mining Journal has a feature on Marquette Mountain, a UP ski resort. The feature reviews the ski season and discusses some plans for the summer including their successful frisbee golf course, chair lift rides for mountain bikers and the potential of constructing a bandshell and holding summer concerts. As always with the Mining Journal, great photos are included. Moose on the Loose in Marquette The Mining Journal reports that a yearling moose is wandering around the city of Marquette (shades of Northern Exposure??). Story includes some photos! Father Marquette Discovers the Mississippi River During the summer of 1673, Father Jacques Marquette became the first Frenchman to explore the Mississippi River. To this day, these explorations remain among the most fascinating that occurred in North America. Four Marquette City Commissioners Recalled The Mining Journal reports that in the Marquette's first-ever recall election, four commission members - Mayor Jerry Irby and commissioners Stu Bradley, Sandy Spoelstra and Sue Kensington - were removed from office by a nearly two-to-one vote. The ballot asked whether the commissioners should be recalled "because of his/her vote on January 31, 2005 to fire the City Attorney, Ms. Bonnie Hoff?" Two Big Recreational Land Purchases in Marquette The Mining Journal reports that Marquette Township and the city of Marquette now own the majority of the Carp River valley area following two recent land purchases. The region includes the roughly 300-acre Marquette Mountain ski & recreational area and the township hopes to work with the city on a cooperative, comprehensive plan for the valley area. Presque Isle is First Thousand Footer in Marquette since '97 The Mining Journal has a report (with typically nice photo) on the rare appearance of a 1000-foot vessel last weekend. The ore carrier Presque Isle was the first thousand footer to call in Marquette since 1997 and loaded 50,000 tons of iron ore pellets, an amount that would require 825 railroad cars to haul. Pere Marquette Beach: No Sharks or Jellyfish The Muskegon Chronicle reports that Muskegon's Pere Marquette Beach is the "Beach Find" in the October issue of National Geographic Traveler magazine. The feature says the the 2-mile stretch of sand beach "remains what locals call America's best-kept secret". Muskegon Public Works Director Robert Kuhn listed among the beaches attributes "No jellyfish -- and no sharks." Trail 8 to Run Through Marquette The Mining Journal reports that the Marquette City Commission has issued a snowmobile trail permit to Hiawatha Trails, Inc. for a route that runs through property the city purchased in a major land deal earlier this year. The trail runs between Munising and the Copper Country and is known as Trail 8. Marquette Prosecutor Longest Serving in Michigan History The Mining Journal has a feature on Marquette County Prosecutor Gary Walker. Walker's 31 years is the longest tenure since Michigan was made a state in 1837. Walker, who was fascinated by the books (Anatomy of a Murder, Trout Madness) of Michigan Supreme Court justice and writer John Voelker (aka Robert Traver) took a position as assistant prosecutor in 1972 and was made prosecutor in 1974. Marquette Schools Turn Forest into Classroom The Mining Journal reports on Northern Michigan University students, parents and teachers set up about a dozen learning stations in the woods, while groups of third and sixth graders went from station to station taking part in educational activities. Stations included a predator-prey examination demonstrated in a game of tag, a lesson in fossils where kids got to make their own, a paddle wheel dem The Outboard Motor: A Marquette Michigan First The Mining Journal reports that the 130-year-old Lake Shore Engine Works building in Marquette (currently being renovated into condominiums) is the birthplace of the world's first gas-driven outboard motor. The motor was likely built at the plant between 1897 and 1898 by Nels Flodin and (according to historian) likely Carl Blomstrom (who received no credit). Marquette Mountain Opens, Adds Tons of New Terrain The Mining Journal reports that Marquette Mountain opened for the season Saturday, and hill officials have some new amenities and features in store for skiers and snowboarders. The ski hill added more than 67 acres of skiable terrain on the east side of the mountain, creating a new "back country" zone for advanced skiers and boarders. Into the Woods, thru April; Marquette This exhibit traces the forests of the Upper Peninsula from trees over 9000 years old to contemporary times. The natural history area features birds, animal habitats, tree ring counting and plenty of information about tree identification and distribution. The lumber industry is shown through cutting, hauling, railroads, milling, and lumber camp life. Marquette & Harbor Springs Boys, Traverse City & Pontiac Notre Dame Prep Girls are Michigan Ski Champions Marquette Redman won Class A Boys skiing followed by Traverse City West. Traverse City West won Girls Class A, Clarkston was second (85) and the Redettes third (147). In Class BCD Girls, Pontiac Notre Dame Prep narrowly edged Iron Mountain with Harbor Springs finishing 3rd. The BCD boys title was taken by Harbor Springs, followed by Benzie Central & Petoskey. Personal Communication Exhibit; Marquette The Marquette County History Museum has a special exhibit exploring the many obvious and subtle ways people communicate with one another from the earliest pictographs to telecommuncations, providing a glimpse into our long history of expressing ourselves. Marquette, Michigan - 'Paradise Found' Marquette has been named one of the top 200 places in the U.S. for sportsmen and women to put their roots down in the April edition of Outdoor Life magazine. The city was #7 on a list that rated access to public areas for quality hunting and fishing, economically viability of the region and hospitality of the towns. (feature includes a great video too!)
